Sorry for the delay folks!!
So, why Venetian nights??
Well, Venice, Italy, is the one place in the world, other than home, I hope to spend my days….Why?? Well, I am not entirely sure. I came across Venice by accident. I was travelling around Europe with an ex-boyfriend, and although driving through Italy, had no intention of going to Venice. Well, we have all been told that it is sinking, dirty and smelly…so why visit? Well, having hit Milan, ‘THE’ fashion capital of the world, and finding it closed for a national holiday…..and I mean closed, even McDonalds was shut, the nearest Italian city of interest was Venice….so off we went.
WOW!!! What a beautiful place. Inviting, friendly, and incredibly picturesque. For the first time I went and thought…this is it! This is the place I want to be, should be, belong. I know sounds very surreal….but it felt right. You have to bear in mind, you are talking to a person who isn’t superstitious at all….in a ‘touch wood’, ‘never walking under ladders’, ‘desperately looking for the second magpie if I see one’, type of way…but this felt right!!!
Now you want to know what Venice has that other places in the world don’t have! How long have you got? Because I can talk about Venice for weeks, probably months, before I get tired of it….and you can always log off, so who am I hurting?
Let’s take St Marks Square….maybe not Venice as the Venetians know it….yes, quite probably the biggest tourist trap in the world…but also probably the most famous!!!! Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it, that’s my advice. I have never been drawn into any tourist trap in any city before this, but I have to say, my heart opened for the first time here. It is described in many books as ‘The most beautiful room in the world’, and I have to agree. The first 6 or 7 times I went, I wondered around St Marks Square, in awe of the architecture, amazed by everything that was there. Then, on my 7th visit with a friend, we decided we would sit down and order a drink. You only have 2 areas you can really choose to sit down in during the evening, at least outside (and, why, would you spent the evening inside, with all the history outside?), so we choose one of the two, sat down and ordered a glass of red wine each. Although we had been warned over and over again that this was a very costly waste of money……OH NO, I beg to differ…..we sat down just before dusk…..our two glasses of wine came in at 7euros each with a 5euro supplement for the orchestra….This was brought to us, on a silver tray, with a carafe of water, and a selection of nibbles, by a exquisitely dressed waiter, payable at the end of our visit. Come on people….where else in the world can you get a top class orchestra for 5euros per person (the 5euros payable, I must add, just the once!!!!) with fine service, in a magnificent setting, and paying just 7euros a glass of wine!!!!! Tell me, please tell me!!
Anyway, as dusk fell, the orchestra playing, and the wine flowing….the lights came on, starting in one corner of the square and running all the way around…I have to say my breath was taking away from me. I am not, nor have ever been a romantic, awe inspired person….but this did it for me…I was close to tears! It was truly that beautiful. I must have seen it before, but sat down, enjoying it in its entirety has to be the most enjoyable, beautiful sight I have ever had…and I was with a friend… Take a loved one….trust me, if it doesn’t work, nothing will!!!! When I looked around me at the scenery, it felt like I was looking at a picture, because, nothing could possibly be this beautiful… Honestly, if you try one thing in your life, this should be it!!!!
